First Quilting Party is a Success

On Sunday, April 1, the Neighborhood Quilting Project hosted it's first sewing party/workshop. Participants collaboratively finished a quilt in about two and half hours. Everyone agreed that it was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon- just chatting and sewing together. Check back soon for information about the next sewing party and other opportunities to participate in the Neighborhood Quilting Project.

Planning Sketches

I have been working away on the preliminary planning for the quilts. Using a map of the neighborhood as my starting point, I have been developing a slightly complex, though still geometric pattern to prepare the layout for the art quilts. The first piece is almost finished. Check back for images soon. Also, I am hosting a neighborhood sewing party, and everyone is invited- neighbors, friends, and sewing enthusiasts alike. I will post with the details of this ASAP.

Fabric Installation: a map of the neighborhood

There have been almost thirty participants who have donated fabric and the stories of their old clothing, blankets, and fabric scraps. Although I hope to get even more folks to participate, I am going forward and starting the process of planning and preliminary measuring and cutting for the quilts.

Welcome to the NQP Blog

The Neighborhood Quilting Project is an ongoing project, started in the fall of 2009. It began with me going door to door, asking my neighbors for contributions of fabric for a potential quilt or series of quilts that I planned to make- which I am in the process of making. Along with the fabric that I have collected from my neighbors, I have collected the stories about each item I have been given. Most neighbors have been interested in participating in my project; many have invited me into their homes for multiple hours, sharing stories of their past, or pulling out old quilts and items they had sewn themselves. Each participant is valuable piece of this project.

This blog will be a way for me to update participants, neighbors, and anyone else interested in the details and events related to this project. Please check back for updates and news!
